About Ryan Gustin New York

Born November 8, 2002, in Rochester, New York, Ryan Francis Gustin has always shown an immense love for engineering, leadership, and giving back to his community. From his childhood in Penfield, NY, to his current studies in Civil Engineering at Penn State, Ryan’s journey highlights remarkable insight and a commitment to service.

Educational Journey

From first to fifth grade, Ryan Gustin’s academic pursuits began at Plank Road North Elementary in Webster, NY. During these years, he participated in sports such as football, basketball, and baseball. His early fascination with technology also started manifesting at Plank Road North Elementary through his involvement in Lego robotics, setting the stage for his future engineering endeavors. This early exposure to technical problem-solving would later prove instrumental in shaping his academic and professional aspirations.

Years of Growth at McQuaid Jesuit

Ryan Gustin’s New York academic pursuits continued at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, where he quickly learned the school’s foundational principle of becoming a “man for others.” He was selected as a team lead for the McQuaid IgKnighters Robotics Team and was responsible for helping design and build the robot’s climbing mechanism. His most memorable experience was watching the team’s 125 lbs. robot hoist itself off the ground and two other robots hanging off the side and observing it set all three on a three-foot-high platform. Ryan’s hard work paid off when his team won the “Excellence in Engineering” award. 

His technical prowess extended to operating the school’s CNC Mill, where he transformed digital designs into functional components that enhanced their robot’s performance. He leveraged his proficiency in CAD software to design parts and manufacture them using subtractive methods with materials such as aluminum and steel. This hands-on experience with advanced manufacturing technology provided Ryan with valuable insights into the practical applications of engineering principles.

Beyond that, Ryan’s involvement in the school’s stage crew allowed him to contribute to theatrical productions, developing valuable skills in project management and technical operations. Working with several departments, timelines, and complex stage efforts helped develop Ryan’s organizational skills. His diverse interests led him to participate in cross country, junior varsity football, and golf while maintaining his role as a violinist.

Service to Community

Ryan has always been an active member of his community. At the House of Mercy Homeless Shelter, he worked alongside educators to distribute donated gifts during the holiday season, bringing warmth to those in need. His participation in the St. Joseph of Arimathea Pallbearer Ministry also demonstrated his compassion for supporting individuals with limited family connections.

At Maplewood Nursing Home, Ryan dedicated over 170 hours to resident care and engagement, developing meaningful relationships with the elderly community while gaining insights into the value of intergenerational connections. 

His annual volunteering at the Webster Fireman’s Carnival supported local firefighters and community initiatives, contributing to the vibrant community spirit of his hometown. Ryan’s exceptional dedication ultimately earned him the St. Ignatius Loyola Award for surpassing 200 service hours in middle school.

Professional Development

Ryan’s resume shows his adaptability and dedication to high standards. During three years at Oak Hill Country Club, he worked in multiple areas, including golf carts, the bag room, and the driving range. He provided excellent customer service and demonstrated golf expertise to one of the most prestigious clubs in the country. 

One of his most significant moments came when he was part of the 2023 PGA Championship, explicitly working with range operations. He saw and learned everything that goes into managing a considerable event, including how vital detail management is on the big stage. 

While working at Oak Hill, Ryan also worked at Hedges Nine Mile Point Restaurant, where he refined his ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while providing outstanding customer service. Customers routinely complimented and, at times, requested Ryan. His multitasking between each section allowed him to develop crucial skills like time management and interpersonal communication.

Academic Excellence at Penn State

Ryan Gustin has been dedicated and excited about earning his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering since he arrived at Penn State in the fall of 2021. His active involvement in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) keeps him connected with industry developments and provides opportunities for professional networking and knowledge exchange. 

He is also a member of Penn State Formula Racing, where the team designs and fabricates high-performance cars that compete at national levels. Ryan Gustin’s Penn State Formula Racing membership has been active since 2022, and since then, he has been able to use what he learns in class for real engineering projects.

In the summer of 2023, Ryan interned at the DDS Companies in Rochester, NY. Here, he utilized AutoCAD to base map areas for gas central installation and replacement. He also designed profiles, created procedures and tie-in details, and updated drawings to be issued for construction. This internship provided hands-on experience in applying civil engineering principles and reinforced the importance of precision in infrastructure development.

Personal Growth and Interests

Ryan’s commitment to personal development extends beyond academics. He has traveled to places such as Italy, Hawaii, Cape Cod, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, New York City, and numerous national parks, broadening his cultural perspectives and environmental awareness. These experiences have enhanced his understanding of different architectural styles, infrastructure systems, and urban planning approaches across various contexts.

In addition to his love of travel and adventure, Ryan maintains another outlet for physical exercise through regular fitness routines and playing golf. He is also actively growing his audience through media content by sharing insights into engineering, travel, and personal growth on Instagram and other social media. 

Future Vision

Ryan is looking forward to graduating from Penn State in May 2025 and starting his career as a civil engineer. He is particularly interested in contributing to innovative infrastructure projects that enhance community living standards. His semester at the University of Miami in the fall of 2024 has sparked his interest in establishing his professional career in dynamic urban centers such as Miami or New York, where he can tackle diverse engineering challenges and opportunities.
